Course Descriptions

Education is the key to a satisfying and successful career. Marketing and promotion will get a licensee noticed, but education will keep them in business. The Association of REALTORS® School offers a wide variety of education to meet the many and varied career goals of licensees.

The Association of REALTORS® School strives to offer a wide range of course content to accommodate the various career goals of real estate and appraisal licensees. We hope your interests are met somewhere in our 2005-2006 curriculum. Each course provides credit for license renewal, broker licensing and/or designations as marked by the following color codes

Business Development for the Residential Specialist
(GRI 400, CRS 200)

A strong business foundation is the key to building a successful real estate career. This course will help the student establish the fundamentals of business planning that lead to increased profit and productivity. The student will learn how to create a detailed business plan that encompasses the essential areas of budgeting, promotions, marketing and cost analysis.

This course is one of the five required course for the GRI Designation and will prepare the student to:

  • Identify the benefits of business planning
  • Perform a Situation Analysis to make educated business decisions
  • Create a draft of a vision and mission statement
  • Develop income goals using the budget process
  • Translate income goals to specific settled units
  • Develop a marketing plan to meet goals and objectives
  • Calculate and evaluate the return on selected marketing options
  • Create action plans to implement the business plan
(2 days) Tuition: $299.00 includes lunch both days.

e-PRO - ABR Designation (elective)
e-PRO is the only NAR approved Internet Certification Program. The
e-PRO Certification Program is a course completed over the internet which will estaplish a baseline of online competence. This is a skills development program and will train you in the use of E-mail for marketing and risk reduction. This Program will teach the REALTOR® about Internet business principles required to remain in the center of the real estate transaction, including:
  • Options and requirements to get connected.
  • E-mail communication and marketing practices.
  • Web marketing strategies and practices.
  • Creating and maintaining a personal technology plan of action and your Internet marketing plan.  

Tuition: $359.00 (Students have six months to complete this course on-line)

Applicable for elective credit towards CIPS Designation

Know Your Property (GRI 500)
No matter which side of the transaction you represent, knowing the property is essential. Successful agents can better serve their customers and clients by effectively and accurately communicating the key characteristics of a property. Attendees will learn about site structure, style and mechanicals; environmental hazards; and home inspections and warranties. This course will prepare the student to:

  • Provide a general description of the type of site, structure, and mechanical systems common to most residential properties.
  • Identify and describe the water source and type of sanitary waste system used for most homes.
  • Describe regional similarities and differences in the construction and style of homes.
  • Identify typical environmental hazards and problems that affect residential real estate transactions.
  • Describe how to identify qualified environmental professionals, and when to recommend that clients and customers seek their service.
  • Describe the advantages of recommending professional home inspections to buyers and sellers.
  • Identify qualified home inspectors and describe a typical home inspection.
  • Distinguish between the two basic types of home warranty programs, and describe their potential benefits and problems.

Pricing and Evaluating Residential Property (GRI 501)
The pricing of residential property has a significant effect on many aspects of the real estate transaction. The successful agent needs to be able to clearly communicate existing conditions in the housing market, and prepare for the role that property pricing plays in closing the transaction. This course will prepare the student to:
  • Describe how and where an appraiser fits into the transaction process.
  • Define pricing concepts including price, cost, value, supply and demand.
  • Conduct a market analysis based on supply and demand.
  • Describe methods used to make adjustments to comparable properties.
  • Identify and describe three approaches to determining value.
  • Describe the FHA and VA appraisal process.
  • Identify related Federal and Pennsylvania regulations.  

(Full day) Tuition: $120.00 includes lunch.

Seniors Real Estate Specialist
The goal of the Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES®) is to help seniors make wise decisions about selling the family home, age appropriate financing, buying rental property or managing the capital gains and tax implications of owning real estate, among many other issues. By earning the SRES® designation, the licensee demonstrates that they have the requisite knowledge, experience and expertise to successfully provide seniors with professional consultation about real estate. Attendees will:

  • Learn and understand the range of housing and developmental needs of each of the major segments of the growing mature population.
  • Learn how to develop and maintain mature client relationships while earning the respect and trust of the mature client.
  • Understand the major concerns and fears facing each segment of today’s mature client population and have the tools needed to effectively address them.
  • Learn how to create a personalized housing plan for mature clients to reduce their fears and concerns about selling or buying.
  • Use counseling tools that reinforce the comfort and confidence required by today’s mature clients.
  • Learn how to help maturing clients take positive action in estate, real estate and financial planning without offending them.
  • Understand differing professional service and lifestyle needs of our maturing clients.
  • Develop concepts of how to move from a selling (salesperson) style/approach to one of the professional counselor/advisor.
  • Provide the maturing client and their family with a housing plan outline for their consideration when the time arises.
  • Learn how to develop team-building skills with family members and other professional senior service providers in the community.
