Designation Requirements > Why Earn a Designation?
REBAC

Early in its history, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) recognized a need for specialists to better serve the public and to assist other members in serving their clients with specific interests.

Through membership in NAR's affiliated institutes, societies and councils, members devote themselves to continuous study of the most recent trends in their respective fields. The affiliates award specialty designations and certifications that recognize a member's advanced education and experiences in a particular discipline.

Professional designations and certifications have tremendous value and uses in your business. Here are three reasons you should work toward obtaining those that are of interest to you.

1. They make you a better professional

The real estate industry is constantly evolving; from how you market listings to communicate with clients to prospecting. Designation courses keep members abreast of developments in their specialized fields and better able to address industry issues. By searching out the professional designations that appeal to you and fit into your business plan, you increase your knowledge in the specific subject matter that will help you to perform more professionally.

2. They demonstrate your expertise to your prospects and clients

Today’s client is smarter than ever and expects more out of you than just finding a house. A designation can help you demonstrate that you’ve gone above and beyond in acquiring the knowledge to best serve them as a client. And with an assortment of designations and certifications that cover a variety of aspects of the business, you have the opportunity to become an expert in certain areas and niches.

3. They bring you more business

REALTOR® who’ve earned designations and certifications make on average $30,000 a year more than other agents. Real estate professionals who value their designations want to refer clients to those with the same level of knowledge. A large percentage of agent-to-agent referrals are made via the professional designation lists.
