Professionalism Tip: Email Courtesies Part II

E-mailLast week's Professionalism Tip covered email courtesies and regulations. Since that publication, we have received communication from members seeking more information. Specifically, members wanted to know how to report violators and if there were any business relationship exceptions to the law. The Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS (PAR) provides answers to both questions in its Broker Compliance Guide to the CAN-SPAM Act. Members are strongly encouraged to read this document found on their CAN-SPAM resources page.

In part, the document explains that "If the purpose of an e-mail message is to "promote a commercial product or service" then the law applies regardless of the identity of the recipient unless there is a specific exception that can be invoked. Specifically, where agents are sending listing information to other agents or brokers in an effort to sell a property, the message would be considered a commercial e-mail under the law because the sending agent is primarily promoting a product or service. Note that simply belonging to the same organization (MLS or Association) is not an exception to the law; messages sent to brokers or agents that promote listings must follow all the rules below, including the opt-out provision."

Remember that professionalism is more than just following the rules. Even without these regulations, your reputation and important peer relationships can be irreparably damaged by sending unsolicited email. Think about it.

Complete Your ABR Education in 2 Weeks

The real estate market is changing. Buyers recognize now more than ever the value of a professional agent to guide them through the home buying process. They want someone who can present and explain their options so that they can make an informed decision. Take your career to the next level by becoming a certified buyer agent with the Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR) designation. The ABR designation indoctrinates buyer representatives in the service and fidelity that buyers need and expect. The curriculum offers methods for building and maintaining your business.

You can complete the education requirements of the ABR designation this summer with the 2-day ABR required course on June 9 & 10 and a one day elective "Effective Negotiating for Real Estate Professional" on June 17. Course credits are good for three years, so it is not necessary to take both classes at the same time. For details and to register click here. Do you already have your e-PRO certification or SRES designation? Then you are half way there. You have already completed the elective requirement for ABR. The 2-day ABR class on June 9 & 10 will complete your ABR education.

The Association of REALTORS School is also offering a discount to students who would like to complete their ABR education in a 2 week period. All students who sign up for the 2 day ABR course on June 9 & 10 and the ABR Negotiating elective on June 17 will receive a $25 discount when they sign up for and attend both courses. To sign up for these classes, please call the Association office at 610-560-4800.

If you have already completed your ABR designation, you can still benefit by referring a fellow REALTOR to the ABR designation courses. ABR designees who refer another REALTOR will be entered into a drawing for FREE airfare and registration to Orlando this fall for the annual NAR Conference, OR a $300 American Express gift card. To refer someone to the ABR courses, please click here.

Supra iBoxes Allow Users to View Reporting Lists

iBoxAlong with many of the new features that agents have seen with the new Activekeys and the iBoxes, most agents have not seen the new reporting feature on the new iBoxes. Everyone receives the alert when a listing that has an iBox has been accessed, but how can agents retrieve the list of all agents who have accessed the listing? Simple. When agents purchase a new iBox, they can put the box under their name in the Supra system. Once the box is assigned, they are able to log into KimWeb to view a list of agents who have viewed the property that the iBox is placed on.

To log into KimWeb to assign your iBoxes to your name, please click here. If you have any questions, please call Supra at 1-877-699-6787.

A year-long series of brief recommendations to promote REALTOR safety in the office and out in the field.

Watch what you say. Be careful with giving confidential information such as bank account numbers over your cell phone. Eavesdropping is a problem for users of analog cell phones and cordless phones because the FM radio signals these phones transmit are easily monitored using scanners. Digital cellular and cordless phones are less vulnerable to eavesdropping.
