Pipeline Proposed Through Oxford
A large corporation has proposed to build a new natural gas
pipeline that would cross through southern Chester County, and many
residents along the proposed 87-mile route are raising concerns
about the project. According to documents filed by the AES
Corporation with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC),
the proposed Mid- Atlantic Express Pipeline would start at a
terminal in Sparrows Point, Baltimore., and run through northern
Maryland, cross into Pennsylvania through southern Lancaster County,
pass through Lower and Upper Oxford Townships and end at Eagle,
Upper Uwchlan Township, PA.
The public can make comments to AES by using a link on the
website or calling 1-866-640-9270. Affected landowners may return
comments on the contact form sent to them with notification of the
proposed project. (Source: Chester County Press; 6/14/06)
Tax Increases Slated For Local Townships
After four months of revisions, the Great Valley School
Board finally approved the 2006-2007 budget. The budget calls
for a 5.3 percent increase in millage, which jumped from 16.12 in
2005-2006, to 16.97 for the upcoming school year. A mill generates
$1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value. Homeowners with the
average residential assessment of $220,000 will see an increase of
$186, or a total of $3,733 for the year. That number is up from
$3,547 in 2005-6. (Source: Daily Local News; 6/21/06)
The Kennett Consolidated School District board of
directors voted to adopt the 2006- 2007 budget at $58.5 million. The
board approved a 1 percent earned income tax increase on salaries
and wages, along with a 3.3 percent millage rate increase, bringing
the millage rate to 27.57. To the average district homeowner, this
means an increase of approximately $136 per year tax increase.
According to the district’s figures, the average homeowner will be
paying approximately $4,059 in 2007. This is based on a residential
assessment of $194,447. (Source: The Kennett Paper;

The Chichester School Board unanimously approved the
district’s 2006-7 budget of $53,835,218. The budget includes a tax
of 30.09 mills, an increase of 1.49 mills, and represents a total
increase of 5.2 percent over last year’s budget. The average
taxpayer owning a home valued at $150,000 can expect to pay
approximately $4,500 in school taxes next year. (Source: Delaware
County Daily Times; 6/21/06)
The Garnet Valley School Board adopted the district’s
final 2006-7 budget, which calls for a tax increase of about 3.9
percent. The new tax rate is 24.445 mills in Concord Township and
Chester Heights Borough and 24.776 mills in Bethel Township, which
has a slightly higher rate because it sponsors Delaware County
Community College. A homeowner in Concord or Chester Heights with a
$100,000 assessment will pay $2,444.50, or $91.80 more. A homeowner
in Bethel will pay $2,477.60, or $90.20 more.(Source: Delaware
County Daily Times; 6/20/06)
